Hyperlinking is an essential way for helping the use of your site to find more information.

They tend to link to another page, a download or something on a separate website.

How you set up those links maintains accessibility and aids usability.

So, what are the ‘rules’?

Same window or tab, or new one??

To set the link to open a new page or post within your website the link should be set to

Open in same window

To set the link to open another website or a document, or to send an email

Open in new window

To open a new document, you should:

Include the document format and size in brackets after the name, such as –

E.g. Document name [PDF, 12 pages]

Wording to be used

For all links, do not use ‘Click here’.

Instead describe the action –

E.g. …view our admissions policy [PDF, 19 pages]…
